Most excellent!

There's basically just one thing to get here and it's awesome: eel on rice. Excellent service and terrific food. Expect it to set you back around ¥5,000 per person (well worth it).

Have you ever experienced an orgasm in your mouth? This unagi bento from Tomoei is that in a nutshell. It is very pricey but absolutely worth every penny! The eel is very fluffy and it releases this sweet and aromatic flavour in your mouth. My wife and I bought their bento box and we had it by the lake Ashi. If you are in Hakone, this unagi place is a must visit!

First time tasting unagi and it was delicious. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food was amazing. This is a must do if in the area.

Amazing quality unagi, of which the restaurant serves about 150 portions per day. Really one of the best eel restaurants I've been to! The restaurant even serves eel liver.

This is the place for the best unagi experience in Japan in my opinion. Please understand that there are various cooking styles for freshwater eel throughout Japan but is easy to understand why Tomoei is a destination dining spot for this cuisine and the line ups attest to the popularity for both locals, tourists and diners from other parts of Japan. Atmosphere and service match the top notch cuisine offered here

Shirayaki, perfection!

The wait wasn't too bad but it is definitely very popular. Very tender unagi and good portion. The BBQ liver is a nice surprise but a little bitter. The price and location are what prevented 5-star review.

It’s pricey, but the food and atmosphere are excellent. Worth checking out when you visit Hakone area!

number one eel restaurant as far as I know.

The eel was great and was somehow able to book over the phone. There is a wait time of about 40 minutes when we went there and there was a LOT of people.

We made the trek from Tokyo to Odawara to try Tomoei's unagi and were extremely pleased. But, while the food was exemplary, the service was even more so.After a faux pas on our part, they were extremely accommodating of the situation and told us not to worry about it. Because we were embarrassed, we tried to rectify the situation and as a result THEY apologized to US and even gave us a parting omiyage (gift) for our troubles despite it being our fault, not theirs. This level of service and humanity is rare, and we witnessed it tonight in Odawara.

Overpriced. While the eel was definitely very good, the menu is limited, the mixed tempura consisted of some random vegetables and two tiny sardines, all accompanied with a tiny side dish of sliced carrots, pickles and a clear soup. Not worth the 5,400Yen price for the eel. Seems like its more of a tourist stopover with servers wearing kimonos and greeting everyone coming in or going out all in unison. Gets a bit too much after a while.

Very popular restaurant in the area if you're keen to try their specialty - inagi (eel).

Good unagi! Very fatty unagi this time.

Perhaps the best unagi I’ve ever eaten! Unagi Tomoei is ranked as a “popular spot†on Japanese review site Retty, and it’s well deserved. The unagi here is amazing - flavorful, fluffy and grilled to perfection. They use sake quality spring water to prep, and you enjoy it on solid wooden tables. The “jo-unagi†(bigger size) set, including soup and pickles will start at 4,600 JPY after a 1+ hour wait, but it’ll be so worth it, trust me.Unagi Tomoei is at the edge of the Hakone area and can be accessed by catching Hakone Tozan train from Hakone-Yumoto to Kazamatsuri station.
